MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Iowa track and field teams each earned second-place finishes at the Jack Johnson Invitational on Saturday. The women recorded a team score of 104.50, while the men posted a score of 101. The meet was held at the University of Minnesota Fieldhouse.

The Hawkeyes picked up a pair of titles in the 60 meters. Senior Tevin-Cee Mincy took the men’s 60 meters title when he clocked a personal-best time of 6.74. His time ties for third all-time at Iowa. Freshman Brittany Brown and sophomore Lake Kwaza finished first and second, respectively, in the women’s 60 meters. Brown set a new Jack Johnson Invite record when she clocked a time of 7.43. Kwaza finished just behind with a time of 7.44.

“We competed well in many of the same events as we did last weekend,” said head coach Layne Anderson. “Our freshman and sophomore classes continue to lead our program this season.”

Iowa claimed both triple jump titles on the evening. Sophomore Klyvens Delaunay took the men’s title when he posted a leap of 50-5 ¼ (15.37m). Sophomore Kerry Dean Jr. finished fourth in the event when he recorded a personal-best mark of 46-4 ¾ (14.14m). Zinnia Miller took the women’s title. The senior posted a mark of 39-11 ½ (12.18m). Senior Carisa Leacock (39-8; 12.09m) finished second in the event, while junior Sarah Ryan (37-5 ¼; 11.41m) finished fifth.

The women’s 1,600-meter relay team earned a first-place finish. The quartet of sophomore MonTayla Holder and freshmen Mahnee Watts, Elexis Guster, and Alexis Hernandez clocked a converted time of 3:40.54*. That time ranks seventh all-time at Iowa. The men’s 1,600-meter relay team of freshman Aaron Mallett, sophomore James Harrington, sophomore Will Teubel, and senior Ethan Holmes ran to a second-place finish with a time of 3:20.12.

Kevin Docherty took the men’s mile title in his return to his home state. The freshman crossed the line in 4:12.26. Freshman Michael Hart (4:18.08; 10th) also competed in the event. Junior Shannon Maser ran to a 10th-place finish in the women’s mile. Maser recorded a time of 4:54.50*.

“Overall, I think it was another step in the right direction,” said director of track and field Larry Wieczorek. “It was another day of making good progress. We gave Minnesota a run and beat some good teams. It was a good day for the Hawkeyes.”

Mallett earned a second-place finish in the men’s 60-meter hurdles when he posted a time of 8.04. Holmes (8.09) took fourth in the event, while junior Keith Brown (8.73) finished ninth.

Guster (55.86*) and Holder (56.98*) finished third and fourth, respectively, in the women’s 400 meters. Freshman Jared Ganschow (50.43) ran to an eighth-place finish in the men’s 400 meters.

Katharina Trost ran to a second-place finish in her 600 meters debut. The freshman crossed the line in a converted time of 1:31.42*. Her time ranks 5th all-time at Iowa. Hernandez (1:33.18) and Watts (1:33.45*) finished third and fourth, respectively, while sophomore Kaitlyn Nelson (1:37.21*) finished ninth.

Teubel clocked a personal-best time of 1:20.00 in the men’s 600 meters. Teubel’s time earned him a second-place finish. Sophomore Neil Flattery (1:21.01) finished sixth in the event, while junior Kaleb VanCleave (1:21.60) came in 10th.

Senior Adrianne Alexia and junior Rachel Price competed in the women’s 800 meters. Alexia came in third place with a time of 2:13.42*, while Price finished eighth with a personal-best time of 2:14.42*. Sophomore Caleb Wilfong (1:56.65) earned a ninth-place finish in the men’s 800 meters, while Hart (1:56.99) and Sam Fourman (1:57.27) finished 13th and 14th, respectively.

Tayo Oladele-Ajose cleared a height of 5-4 ¼ (1.63m). The sophomore’s mark earned her a sixth-place finish.

Junior Gabe Hull (57-10 ¼; 17.63m) and senior Drew Clark (56-1; 17.09m) finished fourth and fifth, respectively, in the men’s shot put, while Rachel Curry (45-1 ¾; 13.76m) and Alexa Hunt (44-6; 13.56m) finished ninth and 10th, respectively, in the women’s shot put.

Jasmine Simpson claimed a third-place finish in the women’s weight throw. The senior recorded a toss of 59-5 (18.11m). Junior Annemie Smith (58-11 ¼; 17.96m) finished fourth in the event, while senior Ashlyn Gulvas (55-9 ¾; 17.01m) finished ninth. Hull earned a 10th-place finish (56-3 ¾; 17.16m) in the men’s weight throw.

“The next few weeks provide the entire team with an opportunity to measure themselves against elite competition, while preparing to enter the championship portion of the schedule,” Anderson added.

The Hawkeyes travel to Ames, Iowa for the Bill Bergen Invite on Jan. 31-Feb. 1.
