TAMPA, Florida – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team fell to the University of South Florida, 4-0, Wednesday afternoon at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts.
USF clinched the doubles point, winning the first two matches of the day. Vera Bessonova and Olga Martinez defeated Iowa’s No. 1 doubles combination of Anastasia Reimchen and Annette Dohanics, 6-2. Zoe Douglas and Aimee Tarun fell, 6-2, against Juliana Cardoso and Jessica Chaves of USF. Adorabol Huckleby and Kristen Thoms led their match against Nicole Dzenga and Chloe Murphy, 5-4, before the match was abandoned.

“We ran up against a tough South Florida team today,” said UI head coach Katie Dougherty. “This was our first match outside and we struggled a bit with the elements and adjusting. We had a couple of people out of the lineup and were overmatched at spots.”
Anastasia Reimchen and Zoe Douglas both fell in singles match, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 1 and No. 2 spots respectively. Taylor Tamblyn lost at No. 6 singles to Nicole Dzenga, 6-1, 6-3, to close out the match for USF. The singles matches of Kristen Thoms, Adorabol Huckleby and Aimee Tarun were unfinished.
“Hats off to South Florida,” said Dougherty. “They compete hard and played well. Looking forward to getting back to our home courts this Sunday against Maryland.”
The Hawkeyes return to the court for their Big Ten home opener Sunday against Maryland at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex. Action starts at 11 a.m. (CT). Admission is free.
