IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa softball program added another prep standout to its incoming recruiting class on Tuesday morning, signing McKenzie Schneider out of Southlake, Texas.
“We are excited to add McKenzie to the Hawkeye family,” said UI head coach Marla Looper. “She will give us the needed depth in the middle infield and around the diamond. She has an RBI producing mentality and approach that will fit in well with our offensive scheme.”
A four-year letterwinner under head coach Tim Stuewe at Carroll Senior High School, Schneider batted .397, scored 110 runs, drove in 103 runs, and posted a .460 on-base percentage during her prep career. She also helped the Dragons to a district championship as a junior.
As a senior, Schneider hit .435, blasted seven home runs, notched 40 RBIs, and scored a team-high 50 runs. For the second year in a row, Schneider garnered first team All-District and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Schneider was also a two-time Academic All-District honoree and a member of the National Art Honor Society from 2015-2016.
“Alongside her softball skills, McKenzie is a great person that comes form a great family,” said Looper. “She is the youngest of three girls and she has learned a lot about life from the experiences of her two older sisters. She will be able to utilize that skill right away.”
The addition of Schneider gives Iowa seven freshmen heading into the 2017 season. Schneider joins Devin Cantu (Cedar Hill, Texas), Allison Doocy (Ankeny, Iowa), Taylor Libby (Iowa City, Iowa), Taylor Makowsky (Tomball, Texas), Havyn Monteer (Boonville, Missouri), and Lea Thompson (Indianapolis).
