St. Charles, Missouri — University of Iowa freshman Jack Wagner won the 125-pound Black Division title at the Joe Parisi Open on Saturday at Lindenwood University.
Wagner won by fall and major decision in the opening two rounds before rattling off three consecutive decisions to win the freshman/sophomore division. Wagner improved to 13-2 competing unattached. The tournament title was his first at the collegiate level. He placed third at the Grand View Open and Luther Open.
Freshman Matt Malcom placed third in the 157-pound Black Division. Malcom opened the tournament with three straight wins before falling, 6-2, in the semifinals. Malcom had won the first 10 matches of the season en route to tournament titles at Grand View and Luther. He rebounded with consecutive wins on the backside of the bracket to place third.
Four more Hawkeyes placed in the Gold (Open) Division. Freshman Kaleb Young, who was 7-0 entering the tournament with six first-period falls, competed in an open division for the time this year and went 3-1, falling in the 165-pound finals to Missouri’s Connor Flynn, 3-2.
Jeren Glosser (149) and Logan Ryan (165) placed third in their respective weight classes, and Phillip Laux placed fifth at 133 pounds.
