RALEIGH DURHAM, North Carolina – The University of Iowa women’s tennis team opened play at the Kitty Harrison Invite Friday. The Hawkeyes went 4-4 in doubles and 6-1 in singles play today.
“I saw the team move forward today,” said UI head coach Sasha Schimd. “It was great competing to get two of three doubles from a tough William and Mary team. We were also solid in singles and played tough disciplined tennis against top competition.”
Iowa went 2-2 in doubles against Davidson and William and Mary, 3-4 against the University of North Carolina, and 3-0 against Maryland in singles play.
The doubles team of Elise van Heuvelen and Zoe Douglas won both doubles matches today, defeating Davidson’s team of Feaster and Sexton, and William and Mary’s team of Thalen and Cheng, 8-2.
Anastasia Reimchen and Carin Runfelt defeated William and Mary’s team of Madison and Stepanova, 8-7, and Adorabol Huckleby and Montana Crawford defeated Davidon’s team of Shell and Stein, 8-2.
Douglas defeated Ovellet-Prizer from North Carolina in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. van Heuvelen also won in straight sets defeated North Carolina’s Voslquez, 7-5, 6-2.
Huckleby defeated Kane from North Carolina in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2. Crawford defeated Maryland’s Williams in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, and 10-8.
Runefelt defeated Gaudkeault from Maryland in three sets, 6-4, 5-7, 10-8, and Tarun defeated Maryland’s Vsui in straight sets, 6-4, 6-3.
The Hawkeyes will face Eastern Carolina in doubles matches and Texas in singles matches tomorrow in the second day of the Kitty Harrison Invite.
