EAST LANSING, Mich. – University of Iowa freshman Spencer Lee and junior Sam Stoll advanced to the consolation finals of the 2018 Big Ten Wrestling Championships following bonus-point wins Sunday at the Breslin Center.
 
51574Lee, the No. 2 seed at 125, put together three takedowns, four nearfall points, and more than three minutes of riding time to win by 12-0 major decision against No. 4 Sebastian Rivera of Northwestern. Lee will wrestle for third place against Purdue’s sixth-seeded Luke Welch.
 
Stoll, the No. 4 seed at 285, won by fall in one minute, 48 seconds against Northwestern’s Conan Jennings, the No. 6 seed. Stoll will wrestle Penn State’s Nick Nevills for third place.
 
Four more Hawkeyes – Vince Turk (141), Alex Marinelli (165), Joey Gunther (174), and Cash Wilcke (197) – will wrestle for fifth place Sunday at 2 p.m.
 
Mitch Bowman placed eighth at 184. Bowman was unseeded entering the tournament, and dropped the seventh-place 9-4.
 
The Big Ten Championship finals begin today at 2 p.m. (CT) and are televised on BTN. Iowa’s Brandon Sorensen wrestles for the 149-pound conference title. The third- and fifth-place matches will be contested during the title match of each corresponding weight class. Those matches are streamed online at BTN2Go.
 
The Hawkeyes are in fourth place entering the final medal round.
