CHAMPAIGN, Illinois – The University of Iowa softball team fell to Illinois, 6-5, in extra innings in the second game of a three-game set on Saturday evening at Eichelberger Field. The Illini claimed the series victory with the win.
The Hawkeyes struck first in the top of the third inning. Sophomore Lea Thompson’s single was followed by a RBI double off the bat of Aralee Bogar. The freshman then scored on a single by sophomore McKenzie Schneider.
Illinois came back in the bottom of the fourth. The Illini plated four runs on two singles, a double, and a home run to center.
Iowa rallied in the sixth, plating a pair of runs. Senior Angela Schmiederer and sophomore Taylor Libby led off the inning with a pair of walks and were sent home by a Schneider triple.
Bogar scored in the seventh as the go ahead run, but the Hawkeyes were unable to grab the win as Illinois tied it in the bottom frame and plated the winning run in the eighth with a walk-off single.
Lauren Shaw (3-10) took the loss in the circle. The freshman allowed two runs on five hits and a walk. She struck out five. Sophomore Allison Doocy started the game for the Hawkeyes. She gave up four runs on five hits and threw three strikeouts in 3.2 innings of work.
NOTABLES
- Schneider led the Hawkeyes at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort. She registered one single, one triple, and a RBI in the contest.
- Seven Hawkeyes collected hits in the game. They were: Lea Thompson (1), Aralee Bogar (2), Mallory Kilian (1), Angela Schmiederer (1), McKenzie Schneider (2), Brooke Rozier (1), and Cheyenne Pratt (1).
