BIMINI, Bahamas – Senior Tania Davis registered 22 points and six assists, but the No. 14/12 University of Iowa women’s basketball team fell to Florida State, 71-67, in the Junkanoo Jam Championship on Saturday night at Gateway Christian School. Iowa falls to 4-1 on the season.
The Hawkeyes opened the contest on an 8-0 run and led 16-10 at the end of the first period, before Florida State utilized a 24-point second quarter to take a 34-29 lead into the break.
After a back-and-fourth third quarter, Iowa rallied in the fourth quarter. Davis hit Iowa’s first 3-pointer of the game with 8:06 left in the game to spark a 9-1 Iowa run. The Hawkeyes pulled within one point of the Seminoles three times, but could not overcome the deficit.
Senior Megan Gustafson registered a perfect shooting performance from the field for the second time this season. She netted 16 points on 8-for-8 shooting from the field and pulled down eight rebounds. Davis led the team with 22 points and six assists. Senior Hannah Stewart chipped in 14 points and a team-high nine rebounds.

Florida State got to the free throw line 19 times. The Seminoles were 14-for-19 (73.7 percent) from the charity stripe. Iowa got to the line just four times with Tania Davis shooting all four free throws (3-for-4).

“I thought we had a good start to the game, and then it was just called totally different than last night. We went to the free throw line four times and we went to the free throw line 19 times. Last night, we got to the line and took advantage. Tonight, we couldn’t do that. They had three people around Megan the entire game, and we have to figure out a way to knock down open shots.”

Iowa returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 29 when it travels to South Bend, Indiana, to take on No. 1 Notre Dame in the Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
