Gold Takes Game 1 of Black & Gold World Series

IOWA CITY, Iowa — In game one of the Black & Gold World Series, the Gold Squad scored in six of seven innings to take the series opener, 9-1, at Duane Banks Field on Tuesday afternoon.
 
Senior outfielder Justin Jenkins and sophomore infielder Brendan Sher began the bottom of the first with back-to-back doubles to give the Gold Team a quick 1-0 lead. Gold pushed across two more runs in the first frame on a passed ball and a sacrifice fly to lead 3-0 after one.
 
Senior starting pitcher Grant Judkins threw four innings of two-hit ball with two strikeouts to quiet the Black offense. Senior southpaw Adam Ketelsen, freshman right-handed pitcher Sean Barnard, and freshman righty Sam Goodman pitched out of the bullpen, combining for three strikeouts in the final three innings.
 
Senior Zeb Adreon (2-for-3, 2 2B, 3 RBI) and redshirt sophomore Connor McCaffery (1-for-4, 2 RBI) added two-RBI doubles in the third and fourth innings to extend Gold’s lead to 7-0.
 
Sher (2-for-3, 1 2B) and junior catcher Brett McCleary (2-for-4) recorded multi-hit games. Junior infielder Izaya Fullard walked three times in four plate appearances, while driving in one run.
 
For the Black Squad, leadoff man and freshman outfielder Paul Vossen (2-for-3) and senior catcher Austin Martin (2-for-3) recorded multi-hit games. Junior outfielder Trenton Wallace drove in Black’s only run on a groundout.
 
Sophomore pitcher Duncan Davitt started and pitched one inning for the Black Team. Freshman left-handed pitcher Jacob Tobey threw two and 2/3 innings of relief, allowing five hits while striking out two batters. Freshmen Jake Zaetta and Jacob Henderson pitched the last two and 1/3 innings. Henderson struck out two of the four batters he faced.
 
Game two of the intrasquad, best-of-three series is Thursday at 3 p.m. (CT) from Duane Banks Field. Admission is free.
