No. 9 Hawkeyes Defeat No. 22 NIU, Fall to No. 5 Ohio State

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The No. 9 University of Iowa men's gymnastics team scored a 402.800, defeating No. 22 Northern Illinois (325.850) and falling to No. 5 Ohio State (407.650) on Saturday afternoon inside St. John's Arena.

COLUMBUS, Ohio — The No. 9 University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team scored a 402.800, defeating No. 22 Northern Illinois (325.850) and falling to No. 5 Ohio State (407.650) on Saturday afternoon inside St. John’s Arena.

Sophomore Alex Walther earned a career-best score on the floor exercise (13.100).

Dais earned a career-best score on rings (13.650). Freshman Reuven Anderson earned a career-best score on rings (13.450).

Junior Bennet Huang garnered season-best score on the pommel horse (13.650).

Senior Mitch Mandozzi garnered a career-best score on the high bar (13.800). Sophomore Drew Helberg scored a career-best 13.250 on high bar.

Freshman Carter Tope earned a career best score on parallel bars (13.600).

QUOTING COACH REIVE

“It was another consistent meet for us with what we’ve been doing,” head coach JD Reive said. “We were right on target with our projected score based on training, which is great. You want to do what you train. If we want to beat the teams ranked ahead of us, we have to practice better than they do. This team is very capable.”

 

HOW IT HAPPENED

FLOOR

The Hawkeyes collected a team score of 67.300 for the floor exercise. Junior Kulani tied for first on floor with a score of 14.200. Huang garnered a score of 13.750. Davis earned a score of 13.400. Sophomore Alex Walther earned a career-best score of 13.100. Tope scored 12.850.

POMMEL HORSE

The Hawkeyes finished with a score of 65.450 on pommel horse. Huang led the Hawkeyes with a season-best score of 13.650. Tope earned a season-best 13.350. Junior Addison Chung garnered a score of 13.150, tying his season-best. Davis scored a total of 12.800 followed by Senior Nick Merryman who earned a score of 12.500.

RINGS

The Hawkeyes put together a total rings score of 66.600. Davis led the Hawkeyes with a career-best score of 13.650. Anderson scored a career-best 13.450. Merryman also earned a score of 13.450. Huang garnered a score 13.150. Senior Brandon Wong garnered a score of 12.900.

VAULT

The Hawkeyes collected a team score of 69.100. Huang led the Hawkeyes with a score of 14.300. Davis garnered a score of 14.000. Mandozzi earned a score of 14.050. Tope scored 13.650. Freshman Amari Sewell earned a score of 13.100.

PARALLEL BARS

The Hawkeyes earned a score of 66.900 on the parallel bars. Davis led the team with a score of 13.700. Tope garnered a career-best score of 13.600. Merryman earned a score of 13.400. Mandozzi scored 13.150, followed by Huang (13.050).

HIGH BAR

The Hawkeyes collected a team score of 67.450 on the high bar. Mandozzi led the Hawkeyes with a career-best score of 13.800. Davis garnered a score of 13.600. Merryman earned a season-best score of 13.500. Huang earned a score of 13.300. Helberg garnered a career-best score of 13.250.

ALL-AROUND

Huang won the all-around with a score of 81.200. Huang scored 13.750 on the floor, 13.650 on pommel horse, 13.150 on rings, 14.300 on vault, 13.050 on parallel bars, and 13.300 on the high bar.

Davis finished second in the all-around with a score of 81.150. Davis scored 13.400 on the floor, 12.800 on pommel horse, 13.650 on rings, 14.000 on vault, 13.700 on parallel bars, and 13.600 on high bar.

The Hawkeyes host No. 2 Michigan for their final meet inside Carver Hawkeye Arena March 15 at 2:30 p.m. (CT). The meet will be televised live on the Big Ten Network.
