Iowa Takes 3rd at B1G Championships

LINCOLN, Neb. – The eighth-ranked University of Iowa men’s gymnastics team finished in third place at the 2021 Big Ten Championships inside Pinnacle Bank Arena. The Hawkeyes team total was 397.700, finishing only behind No. 2 Michigan (411.000) and No. 4 Nebraska (398.000).

It is the program’s best finish in 15 years when it also placed third during the 2006 season.

Senior Bennet Huang led a group of four Hawkeyes who earned a All-Big Ten honors – the most in the league.  The Palo Alto, California, took fourth in all-around with an individual total 81.550 to earn first-team All-Big Ten honors.

Three Hawkeyes – Evan Davis, Stewart Brown and Peyton Hobson — garnered second-team All-Big Ten honors.

Davis tied for second on floor to earn the recognition, while finishing seventh in all-around with his 80.350. Brown finished third on parallel bars to earn the honor, while placing eighth in all-around with a 79.400, and Hobson earned the distinction after tying for second on rings.

Iowa’s Amari Sewell was also named the team’s honoree for the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

FLOOR

Davis posted a career-high score of 14.600 to tie for second, and senior Kulani Taylor finished with a season best 14.200 to give him a share of 12th. Freshman James Friedman had a career-high on floor with his 13.950 to tie for 17th. Iowa had a season-high team score on floor with a score of 70.500.

POMMEL

Huang led the way for the Hawkeyes with a 13.600 to share fifth place. Davis, the Houston native, took 14th after scoring 13.250, and Iowa finished with a team total of 62.800 in the third rotation of the meet.

RINGS

Hobson led the way for Iowa with a career best 13.900 to tie for second. Davis shared 10th, and Friedman and Huang shared 13th. Brown tied his career high with a 13.200 to tie of 20th. The Hawkeyes posted a season high team score on rings of 67.400.

VAULT

Friedman impressed with a career best 14.250 for 13th, but Huang led the way with a 14.400 to tie for seventh place. Brown’s 14.350 was good for ninth as the Hawkeyes finished with 71.200 team score.

PARALLEL

Brown tied his career best with a 13.900, giving him a tie for third. Huang tied for 10th with his 13.200, as 63.000 was Iowa’s team total in the sixth rotation of the meet.

HORIZONTAL

Davis posted a 13.150 to take 12th, and Huang shared 19th with his 12.850 as Iowa closed the meet with a team total of 62.800.

The Hawkeyes will compete in the NCAA Championships on April 16-17 in Minneapolis inside Maturi Pavilion.
