IOWA CITY, Iowa – Twelve University of Iowa pitchers scattered five hits and struck out 21 batters in a 10-1 victory over Mississauga in the fall opener Wednesday night at Duane Banks Field.
South Dakota transfer Adam Mazur needed just 11 pitches to strike out the side in the first and freshman Marcus Morgan struck out the side in the fifth. Eleven of Iowa’s 12 pitchers tallied at least one “K” on the day.
Mazur, sophomore Ty Langenberg, Morgan, redshirt sophomore Benjamin DeTaeye and redshirt sophomore Will Christophersen all had 1-2-3 innings.
The Tigers took a 1-0 in the sixth on an RBI triple that landed on the right field line, but Iowa tied the game in the bottom half and ended up scoring the game’s final 10 runs.
Junior Sam Hojnar hit a two-run home run off the foul pole in right field in the seventh to give the Hawkeyes a 3-1 lead. It was one of nine extra base hits for Iowa in the game.
