IOWA CITY, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field completed day one of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational on Friday, highlighted by freshman Jenoah McKiver’s school-record breaking time of 1:16.08 in the 600 meters. The Hawkeye sprinter also set a meet record, facility record and the fastest 600-meter time in the Big Ten this season.
“To run those times this early was exceptional. It was phenomenal to watch Jenoah [McKiver] put up that monster school record,” Iowa Director of Track & Field Joey Woody said. “I loved the energy because each heat just got faster and faster and more competitive. You could see things were brewing — when guys see their teammates running fast, it builds their confidence to go after it. To be able to run that fast this early is a really good sign.”
To begin the day, senior Tyler Lienau improved on his school record in the weight throw in back-to-back weekends, winning the event with a throw of 21.43 meters (70’3”). Sophomores Jordan Hawkins (No. 7), Jordan Johnson (No. 8) and freshman Sean Smith (No. 10) competed in the weight throw and all set personal-best marks to move up Iowa’s all-time list.
In the long jump, junior James Carter, Jr. moved to fourth all-time in program history, finishing as the runner up with a jump of 7.68 meters (25’2.5”). Sophomore Tionna Tobias was runner-up on the women’s side, leaping to No. 3 all-time at Iowa and going over 20 feet for the first time in her career (6.13 meters, 20’1.5”).
Senior Nia Britt picked up wins in the weight throw and the shot put. Britt threw a new lifetime-best mark of 20.35 meters (66’9”) to move to third all-time in the weight throw, and won the shot put with a 15.93-meter (52’3.25”) throw. Sophomore Jamie Kofron moved to fourth on Iowa’s all-time weight throw list, finishing third with a 19.39-meter (63’7”) throw.
Seven Hawkeyes recorded career-best times in the men’s premier 3,000 meters, led by second-place finisher, sophomore Nick Trattner (8:10.03). Trattner’s time placed him tenth all-time in school history. Senior Noah Healy was close behind in third, posting a career-best (8:14.80).
Senior Mallory King led the way in the women’s 600 meters, winning the race in 1:30.03. Iowa grabbed six of the top seven spots, and freshman Jaiden Itson took second place with a personal-best 1:31.12.
The Hawkeyes are back at the UI Rec Building tomorrow afternoon for day two of the Larry Wieczorek Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 1 p.m. (CT), starting with the pole vault and the women’s mile.
