Hawkeyes Add Five All-Time Marks at Meyo Invite

NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The University of Iowa track and field team posted five new all-time top-10 marks on day two of the Meyo Invitational.

Senior Nikolas Curtiss led the way for the Hawkeye men in the shot-put, recording a new school-record mark (19.29m / 63’3.50”) on his way to winning the event. Curtiss’ mark currently ranks No. 15 nationally.

“It was another great day on the track and in the field events,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Nik [Curtiss] had a terrific day again in the shot put, throwing over 19 meters and breaking the sixth school record this season for our team.”

Freshman Chadrick Richards delivered a breakout performance, winning the 400 meters with a personal best time of 46.47. Richards took almost a full second off his personal best and now ranks No. 6 all-time at Iowa. Freshmen Everett Steward (47.38) and Phillip Jefferson (48.15) both recorded personal-bests and took home third and fifth, respectively. Freshmen Drake Woody (48.64) and Evan Shuster (49.17) each posted personal-best times.

“Chadrick [Richards] had a monster day in the 400 meters and a great split on the 4×400,” Woody said. “It’s exciting to see our young athletes continuing to improve and perform at a very high level as we get closer to the championship part of our season.”

Freshman Tesa Roberts (54.48) and junior Mariel Bruxvoort (55.40) placed first and second in the women’s 400 meters. Roberts posted a personal-best time, which is currently No. 10 all-time, passing teammate Payton Wensel.

Senior Mallory King recorded a season-best and runner-up finish in the 800 meters (2:05.24). Freshman Clare Pitcher finished fifth with a personal-best time of 2:08.58. Pitcher’s time ranks sixth in school history.

“I thought the 800-meter group was very strong, with Mallory leading the way running a very impressive time and setting the tone for the group,” Woody said. “Clare [Pitcher] ran a big PR and is showing her abilities across multiple distances.”

In the early section of the 800 meters, freshmen Amber Aesoph and Grace Bookin-Nosbisch each clocked new personal-best times, as they finished first (2:09.89) and second (2:10.59).

Antonio Abrego continued his outstanding freshman campaign by winning his heat of the 800 meters, finishing fifth overall with a personal best of 1:48.47. Freshman Jason Hoffman dipped under 1:50 for the first time in his career, placing fourth in the early section with a time of 1:49.62.

Freshman Miya Brines finished third in the 60 hurdles with a personal-best time of 8.59. Freshman Kalil Johnson recorded back-to-back personal bests in the 60-meter hurdles, recording a time of 8.00 in the final to finish fourth.

Sophomore Nick Trattner and senior Noah Healy each recorded personal-best times and finished in the top 10 in the mile. Trattner finished fourth (4:07.93), while Healy finished eighth (4:08.86).

The Hawkeye men and women closed out the meet by winning the 4×400-meter relays. The women posted a time of 3:37.27, while the men recorded a time of 3:05.83, which is currently No. 6 all-time.

“Both squads ended the meet in dominating fashions and ran some impressive times regardless of being way out front the entire race,” Woody said. “We’re looking forward to next weekend when we go head to head against some of the best schools in the country.”

The Hawkeyes return to action February 11, as they split squads and head to the Iowa State Classic in Ames, Iowa, and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
