TEMPE, Ariz. – University of Iowa track and field concluded the second day at the Baldy Castillo Invite in Tempe, Arizona, on Saturday night – highlighted by sophomore Kalen Walker’s school-record performance in the 100 meters (10.20).
Walker tied a school record indoors in the 60 meters in his first race as a Hawkeye, and broke Justin Austin’s 100-meter school record (10.21) set in 2011 in his first outdoor race as a Hawkeye.
Sophomore LaSarah Hargrove ran a wind-aided mark of 11.13 to win the 100 meters and set a new career-best time. Her mark would have been good for a school record, but was just outside of the wind-legal threshold.
“Kalen [Walker] and LaSarah [Hargrove] both competed great today in the 100 meters and the relays,” Iowa Director of track and Field Joey Woody said. “Their 100-meter races weren’t their best technically, but that’s exciting to see because I think there’s still a ton of room to improve for both of them. I always say if you are competing to win at meets like this, your performances will take care of themselves and that’s exactly what happened for all of our event winners.”
Additionally, the Hawkeyes had event-winners in the men’s long jump, men’s shot put and women’s 400-meter hurdles.
Junior James Carter, Jr., won the long jump (7.34m / 24’1”), senior Nikolas Curtiss won the shot put (18.84m / 61’9.75″), moving to sixth all-time outdoors at Iowa, and senior Erin Dowd (57.47) won the 400-meter hurdles and moved to fourth all-time at Iowa.
“I’m super excited for Erin [Dowd],” Woody said. “She dealt with some injuries last season when she transferred here that didn’t allow her to compete, but we both agreed that wasn’t how this chapter of her life was going to end. She decided to come back and see what she could do this season and it’s already paying off big time.”
Senior Josh Braverman finished runner-up in the 110-meter hurdles (13.74) with a career-best time. Sophomore Grant Conway (13.99) and freshman Kalil Johnson (14.08) finished fifth and sixth, respectively. On the women’s side, sophomore Myreanna Bebe (13.36) finished third and freshman Paige Magee (13.62) was sixth.
Freshman Everett Steward (46.59) ran a career-best time in the 400 meters and finished fourth overall and third among collegians.
In the 1,500 meters, freshman Max Murphy (3:46.71) and sophomore Nick Trattner (3:49.78) recorded career-best times and finished third and fifth, respectively. On the women’s side, freshman Amber Aesoph recorded a big career-best time (4:29.32) to take sixth.
The Hawkeyes have a week off before splitting up and returning to the track for the San Francisco State Distance Carnival in San Francisco, California, and the Florida Relays in Gainesville, Florida, on March 31-April 2.
