Hawkeyes Beat State; Post 5th Best Score in Program History

AMES, Iowa – The 19th-ranked University of Iowa women’s gymnastics capped a 196.825 at Hilton Coliseum on Friday night, defeating No. 26 Iowa State in an Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series meet. Iowa took first place in four events, scoring the highest vault score since 2004 with 49.500.

Iowa’s 196.825 ties a season high and is tied for the fifth-best score in program history, tying the score set against Nebraska earlier this season. The Hawkeyes closed the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series score to 12-11 with only softball remaining in the 2021-22 series.

Bars
The Gymhawks began the event on the bars, with sophomore Adeline Kenlin landing a stick to score a 9.775 to take second place. Freshman Marissa Rojas competed in her first bars event of the season, tying with senior Carina Tolan for third place after both scoring a 9.750. Junior JerQuavia Henderson and senior Alex Greenwald both posted a 9.725, while junior Allyson Steffensmeier scored a 9.275 to assist in the teams overall score of 48.725.

Vault
Iowa posted the second-highest vault score in program history with a 49.500 with three gymnasts setting career-highs. Junior Linda Zivat made her debut after missing the last three meets to take the vault title, setting a career-high 9.925 to tie for ninth place in program history. Senior Bridget Killian posted a 9.900 for the second time in a row to tie for second place with her two teammates, senior Lauren Guerin, who set a new season-high, and Henderson. Sophomore Allyson Zuhlke posted a career-best 9.875, performing the “Zuhlke” and sophomore Kendall LaPlante set her own career-high 9.800 to give Iowa a .225 lead over Iowa State.

Floor
The Hawkeyes, who are ranked No. 7 nationally on floor, brought the heat, scoring a 49.400. Guerin and Henderson, who are both tied for eighth nationally, remained hand-and-hand, tying for first place after both scoring a 9.975 after receiving one ten for the second time this season, tying their own school records. Senior Clair Kaji set a new season-high after scoring a 9.925 to tie for third place. Killian posted a 9.775 with Rojas following with a 9.750. Greenwald posted a 9.000 to help assist in the 49.400 overall floor score.

Beam
The Hawkeyes secured their win after posting a 49.200 on beam with Killian and Kenlin tying for the event-title after both scoring 9.900s. Kaji placed third after casually scoring a 9.875, and senior Mackenzie Vance scored a 9.800. Henderson and Rojas both scored a 9.725 to help assist in the Hawkeye victory.

All-Around
JerQuavia Henderson was the only gymnast to compete in all-around, scoring 39.325 to take the event title. The junior captured her third all-around title, and has placed in the top three in all six times she has competed.

The Hawkeyes head to the West Coast to close out the regular season, as they travel to Berkeley, California, on March 13 to face No. 8 California. The meet is set to start at 4 p.m. (CT) and it will be streamed on the Pac-12 Network.
