Hawkeyes Conclude Calusa Cup

NAPLES, Fl. – The University of Iowa men’s golf team tied for eighth place on Tuesday at the Calusa Cup. Second and third round play came to an end at Calusa Pines Golf Club after play on Monday was cut short due to weather delay.

No. 11 Georgia Tech was the tournament champion, topping a field that included seven of the top 25 teams in men’s collegiate golf. The Yellow Jackets were the only team to finish below par on the week, shooting 857 (-7) at the Golf Digest’s No. 73 ranked course in the United States.

Junior Mac McClear and senior Gonzalo Leal Montero posted top 20 finishes on the loaded leaderboard. McClear tied for 16th at 220 (+4) on the week. The reigning Big Ten Champion fired Iowa’s only round below par at the event on Sunday. Leal Montero tied for 19th at 222 (+6) after 54 holes.

Sophomore Callum Macfie shot an Iowa-best score of 73 (+1) in the final round. Macfie finished strong, drilling a two-shot score on the par 5 18th hole for a double eagle.

“It landed exactly in the soft spot where I wanted it to, rolled up and just rolled in like a putt,” said Macfie of his first career albatross. “This pin is really difficult, and this pin is treacherous…  At such a special place like Calusa, the things they have done for us, it makes it that much sweeter. I struggled at times this week, but to end the week on a high note was nice.”

Junior Ronan Kleu and freshman Ian Meyer tied for 37th, shooting 231 (+15) on the week.
