TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Iowa track and field broke two school records on Saturday at the Jim Click Shootout in Tucson, Arizona. The men dominated the team race, topping Arizona by a 174-111 margin. The women finished second, 16.5 points back from Arizona.
Sophomore Jenoah McKiver ran an NCAA-leading time (44.74) in the 400 meters, breaking the school record and setting the No. 2 time in the world for 2022. The indoor NCAA runner-up is now the fastest Hawkeye quarter-miler ever, both indoors and outdoors. Freshman Everett Steward (46.40) ran the 11th-fastest time in Iowa history.
“It was an amazing day for Iowa track and field,” Iowa Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Jenoah had one of the best meets in Iowa history, breaking the school record in his opening 400-meter race this season, and then coming back to split 43.8 on the 4×400. He’s an amazing talent and just as impressive is his work ethic and dedication to taking care of himself every day so he can perform at his best when it counts.”
The men’s 4×100-meter relay team of sophomores Kalen Walker, Austin Kresley, Gratt Reed and freshman Khullen Jefferson set a second school record (39.03) – the fourth-fastest time in the NCAA this season. The women’s quartet of sophomore LaSarah Hargrove, freshman Lia Love, senior Erin Dowd and freshman Paige Magee ran the second-fastest mark in Iowa history (44.06) – just two-hundredths of a second off of the school record.
“The men’s and women’s relays got things started,” Woody said. “That was the first time we’ve run those members together for both teams. I believe we can run much faster with both squads.”
Hargrove and Love both won individual events on the afternoon. Hargrove posted the second-fastest mark over 200 meters in program history (22.79), and Love did the same in the 100 meters (11.33). Hargrove’s time clocks in at No. 6 in the NCAA this season.
“I was super impressed with Lia, who came out and beat a very competitive field in the 100 meters with a huge wind-legal PR,” Woody said. “LaSarah had a terrific day leading off our 4×100 and coming back to run the first sub-23 200-meter race of her career. She executed much better than at Florida Relays and set herself up to win by a large margin against a very good field.”
Sophomore Grant Conway won the 110-meter hurdles (13.81) and recorded a personal-best time, Reed finished runner up (13.87), also recording a career-best time. Freshman Drake Woody was the runner up in the 400-meter hurdles (51.20), and freshmen Phillip Jefferson (51.36) and Nathan Farrell (51.65) finished third and fourth, respectively. All three recorded personal-best times.
In the throws, senior Nik Curtiss won the shot put (18.72m / 61’ 5”), his second meet win in as many tries this outdoor season. Sophomores Jordan Johnson (56.06m / 183’ 11”) and Kat Moody (52.42m / 171’ 11”) won the men’s and women’s discus events. Moody moved to fifth all-time at Iowa and sophomore teammate Jamie Kofron moved to No. 7 on Iowa’s all-time list (50.62m / 166’ 1”). Junior Nicole Berry moved to fifth all-time in the women’s shot put (15.37m / 50’ 5.25”) and Kofron jumped to No. 8 (15.06m / 49’ 5”).
Junior James Carter, Jr., won the men’s triple jump (15.84m / 51’ 11.75”). Freshman Alli Bookin-Nosbisch (2:08.39) ran a career-best and moved to eighth all-time at Iowa in the 800 meters.
The Hawkeyes capped off the meet with a pair of excellent 4×400-meter relays. On the women’s side, the team of junior Mariel Bruxvoort, freshman Tesa Roberts and seniors Payton Wensel and Dowd ran the fourth-fastest time in school history (3:35.40), winning the meet. The men’s squad of Steward, freshman Armando Bryson, junior Julien Gillum and McKiver won the meet and posted the third-fastest mark in school history (3:02.39), and fifth-fastest in the NCAA this year. McKiver anchored 43.8 to put an exclamation point on his remarkable day.
Iowa heads west next weekend to California for the Mt. Sac Relays in Ontario, the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, and the Beach Invitational in Long Beach.
