LAS VEGAS – University of Iowa redshirt freshman Cullan Schriever went from unseeded to finishing eighth in the 61kg weight class at the U.S. Open Senior Championships at South Point Hotel, Casino and Spa in Las Vegas.
The Mason City, Iowa, native lost his first match by the score of 8-6 to Julian Chlebove of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club before reeling off four straight victories on the backside of the bracket.
After fighting his way back to the podium, Schreiver went on to finish eighth overall. He just missed earning a spot in the 2022 World Team Trials, as the top seven finishers qualified.
Pat Lugo of the Hawkeye Wrestling Club earned a spot into the World Team Trials at 65kg by tying for sixth. Lugo advanced to the semifinals with three straight victories before falling to Kendric Maple in the semifinals, 3-2.
In the U20 Freestyle bracket, freshman Caleb Rathjen won two matches in the 65kg weight class.
In the women’s senior division, three HWC members qualified for the Challenge Tournament. Top-seeded Victoria Francis finished fourth in the 76kg bracket and teammate Jordan Nelson placed seventh. Rachel Watters also went on to finish seventh at 65 kg.
