COLLEGE PARK, Md. – University of Iowa volleyball fell to Maryland, 3-1, Sunday afternoon in the Xfinity Center Pavilion
The Hawkeyes were led offensively by junior Delaney McSweeney who hit at a clip of .316 and sophomore Michelle Urquhart who tallied 10 kills in the match. Junior Bailey Ortega and redshirt-freshman Sydney Dennis led the team with 17 assists and 14 digs, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (Iowa, 25-21): Iowa started the match strong, getting kills from three different Hawkeyes to take the lead, 5-1. Maryland battled back, and with an unsuccessful challenge from Iowa, got within two, 6-4. The Terrapins offense was strong getting back-to-back kills to tie the set at eight. The Hawkeyes took back the lead, 11-9, with a kill from Urquhart and a Maryland error. Two straight kills from senior Amiya Jones and sophomore Toyosi Onabanjo extended the Iowa lead to three. The two teams exchanged points as the Hawkeyes were able to stay out front. Sophomore Addie VanderWeide’s defense gave the Hawkeyes the 18-15 lead after she was a part of two blocks. Maryland took its first timeout of the set after an ace from senior libero Mari Hinkle and Iowa held a four-point lead. The Terps were not going down without a fight as they were able to get a few points here and there. Back-to-back kills from Urquhart forced Maryland to take their final timeout with Iowa up 23-18. The Hawkeyes got to set point thanks to a kill from Jones and were able to secure the victory on a service error from Maryland.
SET 2 (Maryland, 25-23) The second set opened with Maryland taking an early lead, 7-3, after two 3-0 runs. After an Iowa timeout, the two teams were going point for point, but the Terps went on to get another three straight to extend their lead to six. The Hawkeyes quickly took their second timeout of the set down 12-6. Iowa was not going away as they responded with a 6-1 run that included back-to-back aces from Onabanjo. Maryland called a timeout with their lead at three, 16-13. Back-to-back kills from senior Edina Schmidt opened up a 6-0 scoring run for the Hawkeyes as they took the lead, 19-17. After a timeout, Maryland came out and tied it at 19 after a block. The end of the set was going back and forth, but Maryland was able to secure the set on back-to-back kills.
SET 3 (Maryland, 25-14): The Terps opened the third set with their foot on the gas, going up 6-1 with the help of two aces. Iowa was able to get a few points here and there, but Maryland
extended their lead to seven, after a 3-0 run. The Hawkeyes took their first timeout after a block put the Terps up, 13-5. Back-to-back kills from Urquhart and Onabanjo got the score to 15-8. Iowa was fighting to keep the set within reaching distance as a kill from Schmidt cut the Maryland lead to six at 17-11. The Terps were rolling as the Hawkeyes called a timeout down, 20-11. Maryland closed out the set in commanding fashion winning by 11.
SET 4 (Maryland, 27-25 ): The fourth set opened evenly matched, but Maryland was able to take the lead, 6-4, after capitalizing on Iowa errors. The Hawkeyes were able to respond after a timeout getting within one, 8-7. The Terps answered right back opening a 4-0 scoring run to take a 12-7 lead. A kill and a block from Urquhart cut the Maryland lead to three. The Hawkeyes recorded six straight points to take the lead, 17-15. A block from redshirt-senior Lily Tessier extended the Iowa lead to three as Maryland called a timeout. The Hawkeyes were the first to 20 after a kill from Jones. The Terps did not give up as they were able to come back and tie it at 21. Once again the teams exchanged points, but a kill form Onabanjo got Iowa to set point. Back-to-back kills for the Maryland tied the set at 24. The Terps got to match point, but a service error kept the match alive for the Hawkeyes. Maryland was able to record two straight points to secure the match victory.
