DUBUQUE, Iowa – Three University of Iowa wrestlers – Drake Ayala (133), Aiden Riggins (165) and Bradley Hill (285) – claimed titles on Saturday at the Pat “Flash” Flanagan Open. All 11 Hawkeyes competing were wrestling unattached.
Iowa also got a runner-up finish from Joel Jesuroga (149), a third-place finish from Charles Matthews (125), fifth-place finishes from Jace Rhodes (133), Carter Martinson (157) and Easton Fleshman (285) and a sixth-place finish from Aidan McCain (184).
Ayala rolled to the championship match with a fall and two technical falls at 133 before posting a 7-2 decision over Northern Iowa’s Cory Land in the finals.
Riggins had a 1:18 fall in his opening match before posting back-to-back technical falls, winning 16-1 and 21-5. In the semifinals, Riggins had a 10-5 decision over Wisconsin’s Gavin Model before winning a 14-3 major decision over Loras’ Matt Connelly in the final.
Hill was dominant at 285 pinning his way to the finals. He posted four consecutive falls in 1:29, 1:53, 1:53 and 1:21 before defeating Wisconsin’s Gannon Rosenfeld, 3-1, in the championship bout.
Jesuroga advanced to the championship match at 149 courtesy of a pin, technical fall and decision. He dropped the finals bout in tiebreakers to UNI’s Ryder Downey, 2-1.
Charles Matthews went 5-1 on the day. After dropping a second-round decision to Wisconsin Oshkosh’s Luc Valdez, Matthews reeled off four straight bonus point victories – a pin and three majors – including a 11-2 major in the third-place match.
The Hawkeyes return to action Friday, traveling to Minneapolis to face Minnesota at 8 p.m. (CT) from Maturi Pavilion. The dual will be televised live on BTN.
