PARKVILLE, Missouri – A two-out two-RBI double by Kyle Huckstorf in the bottom of the eighth propelled the University of Iowa baseball team to a 5-4 victory over South Dakota State on Friday afternoon on Field #5 at the Creekside Baseball Complex.
“Tough day to play,” said head coach Rick Heller. “As it was everywhere in the midwest and the north where people were playing today. We weren’t sharp, made some mistakes, made some errors. Worked out of some jams with a couple double plays. Looked like it was going to cost us in the eighth, when they were able to plate two off some free bases. Guys came back in the bottom of the eighth and found a way to get it done.”
Huckstorf was 4-for-5 with two RBIs in the contest. He was joined by Michael Seegers who was 2-for-5 with an RBI as the Hawkeyes with multi-hit games. Raider Tello and Brennen Dorighi also recorded RBIs for Iowa.
“Kyle Huckstorf had a big day today,” said Heller. “Two doubles, two singles, and the double to score the go ahead run from first.”
Brody Brecht got the start for Iowa throwing five innings and striking out five. He allowed two earned runs. Zach Voelker and Will Christophersen combined for three innings of middle relief, and Luke Llewellyn earned his first save of the season.
“Tough day to play but found a way to get it done,” said Heller. “Showed a lot of character, but there are still a lot of things we need to clean up.”
