TUCSON, Ariz. – University of Iowa track and field broke two school records at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona, on Saturday as the Hawkeyes split up for Arizona and the Drake Relays in Des Moines, Iowa.
Freshman Mike Stein broke the javelin school record late Saturday night with a 7.5-meter personal-record throw of 75.59 meters (248’ 0”) in his last effort of the competition.
Junior Austin Kresley broke another school record, this time in the men’s 200-meter dash. He shaved four-tenths off his previous 200-meter best to finish first against collegians and third overall in 20.32.
In the women’s 800-meter run, juniors Alli and Grace Bookin-Nosbisch, finished first and second, respectively. Alli ran the second-fastest time in program history, crossing the finish line in 2:04.37 and Grace ran Iowa’s fourth-fastest time in 2:05.49.
The men’s 400-hurdle duo of senior Julien Gillum and junior Austin West posted the program’s third and fifth best performances. Gillum improved his time by over half a second (49.73) and West knocked off 1.7 seconds, crossing the finish in 50.26.
The women thrived in the relays with the 4×100-meter relay consisting of senior LaSarah Hargrove, sophomore Lia Love, freshman Alexandria Edison and junior Paige Magee posted the third best time (44.10) in the Iowa record book. Junior Ali Dorn, redshirt freshman Chloe Larsen, freshman Audrey Biermann and senior Mariel Bruxvoort followed up with the fifth-fastest 4×400-meter relay (3:35.10) in program history.
Up next, the Hawkeyes will send a small group to the Dr. Tucker Open hosted by Dubuque on Sat., May 6.
