Hawkeyes Standout at USATF Championships Day 2

EUGENE, Ore. – University of Iowa track and field continued competition at the USATF Outdoor Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon, on Friday.

Junior Austin West completed the decathlon, earning 8,331 points and placing third. His momentum from day one carried over into Friday, starting with a career best 14.22 mark in the 110-meter hurdles. Following his sixth place finish in the hurdles, West turned in a throw of 42.45 meters (139’ 3”) in discus. The pole vault was the third event of the day, where the Hawkeye tied a personal record with a 4.30 meter (14’ 1.25”) jump. Historically one of his best events, West claimed fifth in the javelin with a 59.65 meter (195’ 8”) mark. Heading into the final event of the competition, the Hawkeye decathlete needed a boost to finish in the top three. West delivered yet another career best, this time in the 1,500-meters. His first-place time of 4:20.98 catapulted him to bronze medal status.

Star hurdler Paige Magee earned a spot in the 100-meter hurdle semifinals, crossing the line in 13.12 to qualify. Tionna Tobias was just behind in 13.43.

In the men’s 400-meter hurdles, Julien Gillum continued his career with a 50.53 qualification to tomorrow’s semifinals. On the women’s side, former Hawkeye Erin Dowd qualified for the semifinals of the 400-meter hurdles following her 56.99 performance. Current Hawkeyes Mariel Bruxvoort and Paige Magee just missed advancement with times of 59.01 and 59.16, respectively.

In the U20 competition, freshman Natalie Harris wrapped up a strong rookie campaign with an 11th-place finish in the 100-meter hurdles. Her preliminary time of 13.69 was just nine-hundredths off of advancement.

Hawkeye alum Brittany Brown used an 11.00 time in the semifinals of the women’s 100-meter dash to cement her spot in the finals. To close out the night, Brown posted a personal-best 10.90 in the women’s 100 meters, finishing second in a tight field. 

Action resumes Saturday in Eugene with the start of the U20 decathlon at 12:05 p.m. (CT). Senior competition begins at 6:45 p.m. with the 200-meter dash.
