No. 1 Iowa tops Michigan State, 3-1

IOWA CITY, Iowa – Two first quarter goals led the top-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team to a 3-1 victory over Michigan State on Sunday afternoon at Grant Field.

Iowa improves to 10-1 on the season and 2-1 in Big Ten play. The Hawkeyes outshot Michigan State 19-7 and had nine shots on goal to the Spartans’ two.

“Friday was very uncharacteristic of us. We needed to have a rebound game, and we got the outcome today so that was great. There are still things we need to still fix and clean up, but we were able to get some goals on that board, so that’s a positive.”

Senior Alex Wesneski struck first in the sixth minute of the game off an assist from junior Jacey Wittel.

The Spartans tied the game three minutes later with a goal 8:55 into the game from Ellie Rutherford.

Freshman Dionne van Aalsum responded off a penalty corner, giving the Hawkeyes the lead in the 12th minute. She was assisted by junior Annika Herbine and junior Lieve Schalk.

Junior Hillary Cox gave Iowa an insurance goal after a successful penalty stroke in the 41st minute of play.
