ANN ARBOR, Mich. – University of Iowa volleyball fell to Michigan, 3-0, Friday night inside Cliff Keen Arena.
Freshman Gabby Deery led the Hawkeyes with eight kills and a .353 clip, while redshirt senior Delaney McSweeney followed with seven kills. Senior Bailey Ortega posted 19 assists, sophomore Harlei Cole tallied 17 digs, and redshirt junior Anna Davis registered five blocks.
HOW IT HAPPENED
SET 1 (Michigan, 25-20): Iowa kicked off scoring with a kill from McSweeney assisted by Ortega. Michigan jumped out front, but the Hawkeyes fought back to lessen the deficit to one with a kill from Davis assisted by freshman Kaia Mateo and a block by the pair. The two teams exchanged two points each, then scored back and forth as Iowa kept within reach. Three consecutive points off a block from McSweeney and Deery, a kill from Deery, and another block from redshirt Nataly Moravec and Davis evened the score at 12. Michigan service and attack errors gave the Hawkeyes the lead, 14-13, and the Wolverines called timeout. Michigan went on a run and took the lead, but kills from Mateo and fifth year Caitlan Buettner and a block from Mateo and McSweeney tied the set at 18. Buettner and McSweeney each posted a kill, but Michigan took the set.
SET 2 (Michigan, 26-24): Michigan started the set off strong, posting the first two points. The Hawkeyes put up a fight, exchanging points to keep the spread at one. The Wolverines picked up three, but Iowa retaliated, going on a 6-1 run, including a solo block from Buettner, a block from McSweeney and Deery, and two kills from Deery, to take the lead, 11-10. After yo-yo scoring, Iowa went up, 16-14, with kills from Davis and Buettner – both assisted by Mateo. The teams tied the score at 16, 17, 18, and 19, before the Hawkeyes took the lead, 22-19, with kills from McSweeney and Deery assisted by Ortega. Iowa kept fighting but the Wolverines overturned the lead and won the set.
SET 3 (Michigan, 25-14): The Hawkeyes got off to a fast start, putting the first three points on the board with a kill from Moravec assisted by Ortega and a service ace by Buettner. Deery registered a kill and Moravec put up a wall, giving Iowa the, 5-2, advantage. Michigan pulled ahead. The Hawkeyes tried to get back in the set with kills from Buettner, Deery and Moravec, and blocks from Ortega, Moravec and Davis, but Michigan pulled away and finished the set and the match on top.
