ANN ARBOR, Mich. – The sixth-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team won its season opener in shootout fashion over No. 18 Wake Forest, 1-0.
The Hawkeyes and Demon Deacons needed more than 80 minutes to finish game one of the 2024 season, before Dionne van Aalsum found the back of the net as her shootout goal propelled Iowa to victory.
“Unbelievable resilience shown from this young group today,” said head coach Lisa Celluci. “I am proud of the effort and the execution. We grew a lot today. Now it is time to regroup and get ready for UNC on Sunday.”
The teams remained scoreless after four quarters and two overtimes. The Hawkeyes outshot Wake Forest, 13-7, with each team attempting five penalty corners.
After the first two shooters for each team were unable to find the back of the goal, Faye Jansen struck first for Wake Forest. Harper Dunne answered for the Hawkeyes before Mia Schoenbeck again put Wake Forest ahead. Miranda Jackson leveled things out at 2-2.
Mia Magnotta stopped Ashley Hart the Demon Deacons fifth shooter to set up the opportunity for van Aalsum to clinch the match. The Castricum, Netherlands, native got the ball past the Wake Forest goalkeeper and sent the Hawkeyes to a 1-0 record.
