No. 16 Iowa Falls to No. 5 Maryland in Big Ten Tournament

COLLEGE PARK, Maryland – The 16th-ranked University of Iowa field hockey team fell against No. 5 Maryland, 0-1 (2-3 S/O), on Sunday at the Field Hockey and Lacrosse Complex in the quarterfinals of the Big Ten Tournament.

Despite 38 combined shots between the teams, the game remained scoreless through regulation and both overtime periods after strong defensive efforts and goalkeeping from both sides. The match was ultimately decided by a penalty shootout with Maryland .

Maryland’s Hope Rose opened the scoring in the shootout, the Terrapins also had successful strokes from Maci Bradford and Annemijn Klijnhout. Iowa’s Lieve van Kessel and Annika Herbine managed to convert their strokes, but the Hawkeyes ultimately fell short.

Maryland outshot Iowa, 36-to-12 and had ten penalty corners to Iowa’s three. Mia Magnotta had 17 saves for Iowa, a career high.
