VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. — The University of Iowa track and field team wrapped up the NCAA Championships on Saturday afternoon with freshman Abraham Vogelsang earning first-team All-American honors.
“I was very pleased with how well we competed today,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “Abraham started the day off hot with a huge personal best in the 60 hurdles to move into scoring position, then kept that momentum going with a great performance in the pole vault. I was proud of how he battled in the 1,000 meter with another personal best to move up to sixth place and finish as a first-team All-American.”
“I thought Daniela competed well today, but just didn’t have enough to make the finals and finished 11th to become a second-team All-American. She’s had a terrific year and I’m excited to see her build on that success outdoors.”
Vogelsang finished day two of the heptathlon with 5,810 points, securing a sixth-place finish. He started the day strong with a personal best of 8.02 seconds in the 60-meter hurdles, which earned him fifth place. In the pole vault, Vogelsang placed third with a mark of 5.07 meters. To cap off the heptathlon, he set another personal record in the 1,000 meters, clocking in at 2:48.45. In his NCAA Championships debut, Vogelsang earned first-team All-American honors.
Sophomore Daniela Wamokpego, a native of Meaux, France, finished the triple jump with a mark of 13.03 meters, securing second-team All-American honors. This marks Wamokpego’s second trip to the NCAA Championships, where she earned second-team All-American honors for the second consecutive year.
The Hawkeyes finished the NCAA Championships with three first-team All-Americans in freshmen Abraham Vogelsang and Pauline Bikembo and sophomore Ryan Johnson. They also picked up two top five finishes in the men’s weight throw (Johnson) and pentathlon (Bikembo).
The women scored five team points, while the men’s team picked up nine.
The Iowa track and field team will begin its outdoor season next weekend at the UCF Black and Gold Invitational in Orlando, Florida. Competition begins Friday, March 21st.
