LAST TIME OUT

The University of Iowa softball team swept Maryland in their three-game series in College Park this past weekend. The Hawkeyes defeated the Terrapins in game one, 6-1, game two, 9-0 (5 innings) and game three, 7-2.

Junior Jalen Adams (18-5) got the start in the circle fin game one for Iowa. In her 22nd start of the season, Adams threw her 13th complete game, fanning three and walking one. Six different Hawkeyes registered a hit, and six Hawkeyes registered an RBI in the game. Sophomore Soo-Jin Berry led the way in the batters box, going 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Freshman Talia Tretton (7-7) got the start in the circle in game two for Iowa. In her 16th start of the season, Tretton threw her sixth complete game, fanning three and walking one. Seven different Hawkeyes registered a hit, with junior Echo Mattiello leading the way going 3-for-4 with one RBI. Tretton helped herself out going 2-for-3 with three RBIs.

Junior Jalen Adams (18-5) picked up her 23rd start of the season in the series finale. Adams threw her 14th complete game of the season, fanning four and walking two. Six of Iowa's seven hits went for extra bases. Sophomore Soo-Jin Berry continued to swing a hot bat going 3-for-4 with a two-run home run.

SCOUTING THE CYCLONES

Head Coach Jamie Pinkerton is in his eighth season at the helm of the Cyclones. Iowa State is currently 9-6 in conference play, and coming off a series upset against #17 Oklahoma State. The Cyclones first upset came on Friday in Stillwater, 5-4 (8 innings). Iowa State dropped game two on Saturday, 10-1 (6 innings), and then completed the series win on Sunday, winning 8-4. Freshman infielder Jessie Clemons leads the team in the batters box, averaging .384, and starting in all 38 games. In 125 at bats, she has 48 hits and 25 RBIs. Sophomore RHP Lauren Schurman leads the Cyclones in innings pitches with 95.1. Schurman has a 2.86 ERA, along with 49 strikeouts and 37 batters walked on the year. The Cyclones lead the Big 12 in doubles per game (1.47) and rank 70th nationally. Iowa State also leads their conference in hits allowed per seven innings (9.06), and ranks 73rd nationally.

IN THE B1G LEAGUES

• Redshirt junior catcher Desiree Rivera leads the conference and is ranked 24th nationally in runners caught stealing with 11 runners caught.

• Ace junior RHP Jalen Adams is second in the Big Ten and third nationally in victories (18). Adams is first in the conference in innings pitched (144), and eighth nationally.

SOOJ THE STAR

Sophomore infielder Soo-Jin Berry was named one of Softball America's Stars of the Week of 3/24 after her standout game in Iowa's upset against then No. 5/6 UCLA. Berry hit two home runs in the game, the first muti-home run game of her career.

LEADERSHIP COUNCIL

The Hawkeyes have a team voted group of captains, called the Leadership Council. The select for the 2025 season include senior Tatianna Roman, Junior Jalen Adams, senior Rylie Moss, and redshirt junior Desiree Rivera.

STATISTICAL LEADERS

• Sophomore infielder Jena Young leads the Hawkeyes in batting average hitting .382.

• Sophomore infielder Soo-Jin Berry leads the squad with home runs (9) in RBIs (26).

• Outfielders Bennett and Roman each have a perfect fielding percentage. Roman has contributed 40 putouts and Bennett has contributed 61 on the year.

• Jalen Adams leads the pitchers with 144 innings pitched and 104 strikeouts.

STARTING STREAKS

Three Hawkeyes have started all 40 games so far this season; Devin Simon in right field, Jena Young in the middle infield, and Tory Bennett in center field.

HANNAH'S TEXAS TEAR

After posting 16 RBIs and three home runs across four games at the Lion Invitational, senior catcher Hannah Lindsay was named Big Ten Co-Player of the week on February 17. The Surprise, Arizona, native hit .667 in four-games at the Lion Invitational at East Texas A&M.

PLAYING THE BEST 

The Hawkeyes are set to face eight different teams that made the 2024 NCAA Tournament: Alabama, Arkansas, Indiana, Louisiana Lafayette, Missouri, Penn State, Tennessee and UCLA.

BELIEVE THE (PRESEASON) HYPE 

Adams, Berry and Young were named Big Ten Players to Watch for 2025.

NEW ERA OF THE B1G

The Big Ten welcomed four new schools to the conference, three of which will compete in softball for the 2025 season. Big Ten softball added NCAA tournament qualifiers Oregon, UCLA and Washington for softball. The Hawkeyes hosted UCLA in their Big Ten home opener on March 22 in Iowa City.

Iowa will host Penn State for a three-game series at Bob Pearl Field. Saturday's game is scheduled for 5pm CT, Saturday's is 2pm CT, and Monday's is set for 5pm CT. Monday nights game will be on Big Ten Network.
