Hawkeyes Extend B1G Win Streak to 10

The Iowa baseball team extended its conference winning streak to 10 games for the first time since 2007 on Saturday against Northwestern.

EVANSTON, Illinois – The University of Iowa baseball team extended its conference winning streak to 10 games for the first time since 2007 on Saturday afternoon against Northwestern. The Hawkeyes downed the Wildcats, 7-1, at Rocky and Berenice Miller Park.

Aaron Savary got the start on the mound and notched his third quality start of the season while improving to 5-0. The Dubuque, Iowa, native threw six innings allowing three hits and one run, he walked two and struck out seven.

“Really well-played game today,” said head coach Rick Heller. “In all areas really. It started on the mound where Savary was fantastic. He gave us a great start.”

Anthony Watts threw the final three innings to earn the save allowing just two hits.

Kooper Schulte, had a stellar day going 3-for-3 with two doubles scoring a run and plating an RBI. Schulte was a late addition to the lineup following a scratch for the Hawkeyes just an hour before the first pitch.

Kooper Schulte had a really big game,” said Heller. “Stepping in last second when Ben Swails wasn’t able to go. He clutched up big for us.”

Miles Risley and Blake Guerin both put balls over the fence for Iowa as Risley hit a solo shot to left and Guerin a two-run blast off the batter’s eye in center. Daniel Rogers tallied three RBIs for the Hawkeyes.

With the score tied 1-1 after five innings of play, Iowa got to the Northwestern bullpen plating three runs in the sixth. Risley’s homer added on in the seventh and Guerin’s long ball added two insurance runs in the ninth.

“Really proud of the guys,” said Heller. “We got another series, a series on the road. I thought we played really well today. We were locked in and ready to go, we will need to be like that tomorrow.”

The Hawkeyes (20-9, 12-2) have won all five of the conference series they have played.
