No. 3 Hawkeyes Down No. 5 Cowboys in National Duals Semifinals

The third-ranked Iowa wrestling team defeated fifth-ranked Oklahoma State, 18-16, in the National Duals Invitational semifinals. The Hawkeyes will face No. 4 Ohio State at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.

TULSA, Okla. – The third-ranked University of Iowa wrestling team defeated fifth-ranked Oklahoma State, 18-16, in the National Duals Invitational semifinals.

The Hawkeyes will face No. 4 Ohio State at 6 p.m. on ESPN2.

“It is always a good time to wrestle Oklahoma State,” said head coach Tom Brands. “In Iowa, in Oklahoma, anywhere. Every point counted. Mo Endene went and got one. Credit him.”

Iowa picked up an upset to start the dual at 125 pounds with No. 10 Dean Peterson notching a late takedown to defeat No. 2 Troy Spratley, 5-4.

“We got to the edge and I knew there was short time,” Peterson said. “He kind of stopped wrestling a little bit and I felt it. Tried to work my way in and with my speed I was able to get behind him.”

At 133 pounds, No. 2 Drake Ayala won in sudden victory over Ronnie Ramirez, 7-4. The Cowboys got on the board with a sudden victory win of their own when No. 20 Sergio Vega defeated No. 9 Nasir Bailey, 3-0.

Ryder Block picked up a win at 149 pounds over No. 3 Casey Swiderski, 5-3. Block used a first-period takedown and a pair of escapes to earn the win.

Oklahoma State earned bonus points at 157 pounds with fifth-ranked Landon Robideau defeating Victor Voinovich III, 16-5. In a top-10 matchup at 165 pounds, No. 6 LaDarion Lockett won a decision over No. 2 Michael Caliendo with a late takedown.

No. 2 Patrick Kennedy won in sudden victory at 174 pounds, defeating No. 17 Alex Facundo, 4-1.
At 184 pounds, second-ranked Angelo Ferrari won a top-five matchup against Zach Ryder, 4-2.

Massoma Endene clinched the dual for the Hawkeyes, picking up a top-10 win at 197 pounds with a decision over No. 10 Cody Merrill, 4-3.

Iowa forfeited at heavyweight.
