7 Hawkeyes Advance to Soldier Salute Quarterfinals

CORALVILLE, Iowa — Seven University of Iowa wrestlers advanced to the quarterfinals after Session I of the Soldier Salute on Saturday afternoon at Xtream Arena.

In the first championship round, six Hawkeyes picked up wins to stay on the front side of the bracket, with four decisions, a technical fall and a pin.

Jordan Williams scored the first bonus points for Iowa, finishing his match early with a pin in 2:16 against Bellarmine’s Steven Villalobos.

At 174 pounds, Gabe Arnold followed, making quick work of his match against Tyler Martinez of Bellarmine, allowing zero points and picking up a 15-0 victory.

Moving into the second round, Iowa recorded seven victories to advance to the quarterfinals. Williams and Arnold were joined by three others in securing more bonus points for the Black and Gold.

Nasir Bailey continued his dominant run with an 18-3 technical fall over Wyoming’s David Saenz. At 157, it was all Hawkeyes: Williams recorded his second pin, downing Jonathon Malovich in 1:07, and Victor Voinovich kept it going with a technical fall over Peyton Park, 18-2.

With Arnold at 174, Iowa racked up more points with a technical fall against Peyton Westpfahl, 20-4. Wrestling unattached, Harvey Ludington finished the session in style with a tight cradle to pin Bellarmine’s Grant Anderson in 53 seconds.

Session II of the Soldier Salute will begin at 3:30 p.m. CT. The action will be streamed live on B1G+.
