THIS WEEK
The No. 21 University of Iowa women’s gymnastics team returns home to face Nebraska on Saturday, Feb. 7. Action inside Carver-Hawkeye Arena starts at 4 p.m.

The GymHawks are aiming to break the program’s all-time attendance record. Tickets are available for $6 for adults and free for children.

LAST TIME OUT

  • Iowa fell 197.050-196.775 to No. 18 Minnesota, the 196.775 tied for the 16th best score in program history.
  • Freshman Sophie Schriever and sophomore Aurélie Tran shared the all-around title with matching scores of 39.400 for the second consecutive week.
  • Sophomore Sydney Turner and Tran shared the balance beam title with scores of 9.900.
  • Fifth-year JerQuavia Henderson shared the vault title with a 9.900, and Schriever earned a share of first place on floor exercise with a 9.900.
  • Iowa recorded season-best team scores on the balance beam (49.250) and floor (49.175).

IN THE RANKINGS

  • Iowa enters week five of the season as the 21st-ranked team in the nation, ranking No. 15 on vault and No. 15 on bars.
  • Aurélie Tran ranks 14th nationally and fourth in the Big Ten on bars, with an average of 9.895.  
  • Sophie Schriever ranks 19th nationally and fourth in the Big Ten in the all around, following her career high 39.400.

SCOUTING NEBRASKA

  • The Huskers enter the meet with a 3-3 overall record and a 1-2 mark in Big Ten competition. 
  • Nebraska is ranked No. 30 nationally.
  • The Huskers have a conference win against No.19 Minnesota and losses against No. 5 UCLA and No. 19 Ohio State.
  • Nebraska posted a season-high score of 196.65 in its last meet against No.19 Ohio State.
  • Saturday marks the 45th time Nebraska and Iowa have faced off; in their last meeting, Iowa won 196.350-195.700.
  • Nebraska holds a 32-12 lead in the series against Iowa. 

O’ CANADA!

  • The Hawkeyes have three Canadians on the roster for 2026, including three 2024 Olympians in sophomore Cassie Lee, Aurélie Tran and Sydney Turner.
  • Tran leads the team with seven event titles this season, winning or sharing two titles on bars, vault and all-around; one on beam.
  • By competing in the all-around in every January meet, Tran reached a season high of 39.450.
  • Tran won bars titles against Michigan (9.925) and Michigan State (9.925), where she also took the vault title (9.875).
  • At the Border Battle, Tran won vault (9.850) while Turner claimed the floor title (9.925).
  • Turner was named a Big Ten Gymnast to Watch.
  • Tran earned first team all-Big Ten and all-freshman honors after competing in every meet last season.

FRESHMAN PHENOMENON

  • Sophie Schriever has helped the Hawkeyes early in her freshman season.
  • Against Minnesota, Schriever set three career-highs on floor (9.900), bars (9.875), vault (9.850) and in the all-around (39.400).
  • Schriever has won two all-around titles and one floor title this season.
  • Against Michigan State, Schriever placed second in her all-around debut with a 39.250.

THE LLEWELLYN ERA

  • Jen Llewellyn is heading into her second season as head coach for the GymHawks after bringing success immediately to the program.
  • After being picked to finish 10th in the Preseason Poll, the GymHawks took fifth in the regular season and at Big Ten Championships.
  • The GymHawks broke 197.00 for the first time since 2021 against Iowa State, posting a 197.025, the fourth-highest score in program history. In the same meet, Iowa scored a 49.425 on beam, tying the program’s second- highest score in history for the event.

  • Following their first season assistant coaches Craig Ballard, Brenna Brooks and Kyle Grable were named Women’s Collegiate Gymnastics Association WCGA Assistant Coaches of the Year for the North Central Region.
  • Ballard spent the last 13 seasons on staff at Kent State University. Brooks was a student-athlete under Llewellyn at Washington and was an assistant coach in 2024. Grable was on staff at UCLA the past three seasons and was a successful club coach for 15 years prior to that. 

NEW FACES ON THE MAT

  • The Hawkeyes have welcomed four newcomers to the team, all freshmen.
  • The freshman class includes Oklahoma native Maggie Ball, Nevada native Daisy Bowles, Arizona native Stella DePaola and Utah native Sophie Schriever.
  • Ball is the daughter of Oklahoma head coach K.J. Kindler and associate head coach Lou Ball.
