Hawkeyes Drop Series to No. 1 UCLA

The Iowa baseball team fell to No. 1 UCLA, 19-0, in seven innings Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

IOWA CITY, Iowa — The University of Iowa baseball team fell to No. 1 UCLA, 19-0, in seven innings Saturday afternoon at Duane Banks Field.

The Hawkeyes dropped to 15-10 overall and 3-5 in Big Ten play.

“It’s one game and we’ve got to wipe it away because we have to play tomorrow,” said head coach Rick Heller. “The message is it’s not acceptable, period.”

The Bruins struck first in the opening inning, scoring one run after loading the bases. UCLA then broke the game open in the fourth inning, plating 12 runs to extend the lead to 13-0.

UCLA added two more runs in the fifth to make it 15-0 before scoring four runs in the seventh inning to reach the final margin.

Senior Logan Runde was charged with the loss, allowing the first three batters to reach before turning the ball over to the bullpen.

Sophomore Tyler Guerin, freshman Tate Slagle, junior Beau Leisure, senior Justin Hackett, freshmen Brolan Frost and Nick Terhaar all saw action on the mound for the Hawkeyes.

At the plate, redshirt junior Kellen Strohmeyer led Iowa, going 2-for-2 on the day.

“I don’t really know what to say,” said Heller. “I don’t think you really have to say a lot. If we have done a good job — and I believe we have — the pride and the hard work they have put in to this point will show as we step up and face it.”
