DES MOINES, Iowa – University of Iowa junior Ryan Johnson opened his outdoor season with a school-record throw of 75.75 meters in the men’s hammer throw at the Jim Duncan Invitational Friday afternoon.

Johnson claimed the hammer throw title with a school-record mark of 75.75 meters, surpassing his previous program record of 73.20 meters set at the Musco Twilight last season. The junior from Springboro, Ohio, now holds the No. 2 mark in the country.

“Ryan had an amazing start to his outdoor season today with a huge PR and school record on his first throw of the season,” Director of Track and Field Joey Woody said. “He is riding the momentum from the NCAA Indoor Championships right into the outdoor season. This will set him up well going into the next few weeks.”

On the men’s side, freshman Spencer Alf led Iowa in the 800 meters with a personal-best 1:52.70 to finish 10th.
