CORALVILLE, Iowa – University of Iowa track and field opened the 2026 Musco Twilight at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track on Friday afternoon.
The women’s hammer throw started the day with Peyton Wilson and Josephine Flynt breaking the 60-meter barrier for the first time in their careers. Wilson won the event on her final throw at 60.95 meters, while Flynt placed second at 60.79 meters on her last attempt. The duo climbed the program’s all-time list and now have the fifth and sixth longest throws in school history.
Each Hawkeye started their series with a personal record. Wilson launched a 60.02-meter throw to open her set, while Flynt sailed her first throw 59.91 meters.
“Josephine and Peyton threw extraordinarily well,” said Iowa Associate Head Coach of Track and Field Ray Robinson. “Breaking the 60-meter barrier is a huge deal and for them both to do it in round six was impressive, because that is when things can go sideways. I am extremely excited for both of them heading into Big Tens.”
Rain began to fall as the men’s hammer throw got underway. Ryan Johnson won the title with a series-best 74.60 meters. Sean Smith (66.88 meters) and Tate Joens (66.30 meters) turned in solid performances and placed second and third, respectively. Austin Busch rounded out the top five at 58.99 meters and Walker Whalen capped his day at 55.51 meters.
“The men were hit and miss today,” Robinson added. “For Ryan to throw that far on a rough day was impressive. Sean looked much better technically and that can lead to some bigger throws. Tate was very good today. We need to keep those guys rolling and get them in the best shape we can in two weeks.”
Up Next: The Hawkeyes continue action at the Musco Twilight, beginning at Noon on Saturday at the Francis X. Cretzmeyer Track. Admission is $10. Iowa will also compete at the Desert Heat Classic in Tucson, Arizona.
