GREENSBORO, N.C. — The University of Iowa soccer team overwhelmed UNC Greensboro 5-1 off the heels of a four-goal second-half burst on Sunday afternoon at UNCG Soccer Stadium.
Iowa improved its record to 3-1-0 with the victory. This marks the first time since 2011 that the Hawkeyes have recorded three wins while scoring five or more goals.
The match remained deadlocked for most of the first half until Reilly Heman broke the stalemate in the 45th minute, scoring off an assist from Lucia Englund to give Iowa a 1-0 lead heading into the break.
That late momentum carried straight into the second half. Alli Macke doubled the advantage in the 50th minute following a combination play from Elle Wildman and Sofia Bush. Just a minute later, the Hawkeyes drew a foul in the box, allowing Wildman to convert a penalty kick in the 51st minute and stretch the lead to 3-0.
Berit Parten netted her third goal of the season in the 66th minute with a strike from outside the box off a Jada Grove assist. Heman then added her second goal of the afternoon in the 70th minute to push Iowa’s lead to 5-0.
UNC Greensboro midfielder Magdalena Krug thwarted the shutout with a goal in the 76th minute to set the final line at 5-1.
Goalkeepers Braelynn Galt and Caroline Ready combined in net for Iowa. Galt earned her third win of the season after making two saves across 76 minutes before Ready closed out the final 14 minutes.
The Hawkeyes dominated virtually every statistical category, holding a commanding 21-4 advantage in total shots and maintaining 61 percent of the possession.
