2026 Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame Spotlight: Klas Bergstrom

Hall of Fame Tickets

Why is being inducted into the University of Iowa Athletics Hall of Fame meaningful to you?
It is such an honor to get this award, and the fact that Iowa tennis will be highlighted in the Hall of Fame means a lot to me.

Who were your mentors at Iowa, and what did you learn from them?
I would like to mention two people. Firstly, the person that made me pick Iowa—assistant coach Lars Nordmark. He acted as my first mentor coming to Iowa. Then of course head coach Steve Houghton, who always supported me and cared about everybody on the team, on and off the court.

What achievement from your time as a Hawkeye makes you most proud?
I think it would be the team spirit that we developed. That is of course a team effort, but I really believe we had a strong team spirit around us the whole time.

What was the toughest stretch of your athletic career, and how did you work through it?
We had a really strong team my freshman year but did not succeed in the Big Ten finals. That was a big disappointment, but it made us work even harder the following year.

Is there a particular moment in competition at Iowa that still stands out to you today?
The highlight of my career on the court was clearly my last match as a Hawkeye. I played the decisive match in the Big Ten finals in Iowa City and I ended up winning the No. 1 singles match to beat Michigan State to finish fifth in the Big Ten finals in 1993.

Beyond your sport, what’s a favorite memory from your time in Iowa City?
All the friends that I met and some of them that I still stay in touch with.

Where has life taken you since your days at Iowa, and what are you passionate about today?
I moved back to Sweden after college and have now a wife and four kids and live in Stockholm working as a marketing manager for a food company. I am still passionate about tennis and still play some tennis.

How did being a Hawkeye student-athlete shape the person you became?
Being a student-athlete was an honor and has shaped me as a person. The fact that you represent the school and not just yourself made me proud and shaped my behavior on the court.

Do you still have any treasured mementos or keepsakes from your Iowa days?
I still keep a great photo from after my last match with the team.  I treasure that a lot.

Who do you share this honor with?
All of my teammates and coaches at Iowa.
