The University of Iowa baseball team opened its fall slate with a 12-5 win over Madison College in 14 innings on Friday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The University of Iowa baseball team opened its fall slate with a 12-5 win over Madison College in 14 innings on Friday evening at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

Iowa collected 12 hits offensively, led by Jaylen Ziegler, who went 3-for-5 with two RBIs and a stolen base. Garrett Luett and Gavin de Jesus each added two hits, while Nathan Hopkins connected for Iowa’s lone home run.

The Hawkeyes worked 14 walks and stole four bases. Carter Geffre reached three times, going 1-for-4 with two walks and an RBI, while Luett and De Jesus each drove in a run.

On the mound, Iowa used 13 pitchers across 14 innings. Kyle Alivo worked two innings and struck out three, while Nick Terhaar, Carter Wilcox, Tate Slagle, Roman Donels, Will Pierro and Ty Mikkelsen each recorded multiple strikeouts. The Hawkeye staff combined for 24 strikeouts while allowing 11 hits and seven walks.
