MADISON, Wis. – University of Iowa cross country competed at the Big Ten Championships Friday morning. The men took 12th place with 337 points. The women’s team placed 13th out of 18 teams, compiling 401 points.

Both teams improved on their final ranking from last season’s meet.

In the women’s 6,000-meter race, fifth-year Miriam Sandeen notched a season-best 20:57.6. She was the first Hawkeye across the line, placing 56th overall. Crossing the line next were third-years Hillary Trainor (21:05.2) and Elena Torres (21:14.0), coming in 73rd and 83rd, respectively. Torres also recorded a season best. Third-year Julia Gehl posted a new personal best of 21:53.4. Rounding out the scoring was first-year Avery Rump in 21:58.5.

On the men’s side, fourth-year Luke Knepp led the way, placing 50th. He came in at 24:06.1, one second shy of his personal record. Following close behind was fourth-year Miles Wilson (24:09.5), who recorded a season best and finished 54th. Third-year Kyle Montgomery (24:35.4) and second-year Owen Wolfe (24:47.8) were the next Hawkeye finishers, at 78th and 88th, respectively. Wolfe set a new personal best with his time. Completing the scoring was fifth-year Will Ryan, posting a 24:55.8.

HEAR FROM COACH HASENBANK
“Both the men and women competed very well today in a stacked field. The women raced very well up front with Miriam (Sandeen), Hillary (Trainor) and Elena (Torres) just seconds apart the whole way. Julia Gehl ran her best 6k when it mattered most. Avery (Rump) has been a fantastic story. She joined the team during the summer and has been an absolute grinder and has been very consistent. Noella (Ross), Clare (Kelly), and Ella (Magallan) all gave great effort. Ella ran her first race of the season and it was great to have her energy. On the men's side, Luke (Knepp), Miles (Wilson), and Kyle (Montgomery) led us to a solid team finish in a stacked men's field. Miles and Kyle were both nursing injuries, yet showed a lot of grit. Luke has really started to come on this fall. Owen (Wolfe) competed like a warrior today. It was the best cross country race Owen has had as a Hawkeye, by far."

Up Next: The Hawkeyes will head to Ames, Iowa, on Nov. 13 for the NCAA Midwest Regionals.
