Al Seibert

Al Seibert is in his 14th season on the University of Iowa men's basketball coaching staff and his third year as the Chief of Staff and General Manager. He previously served as director of operations for six seasons (2017-22) and five seasons as the team’s video coordinator (2012-16).

Seibert works closely with the basketball staff, overseeing the day-to-day activities of the UI basketball program.

Seibert has assisted in the rise of the Hawkeye basketball program back to national prominence since 2012. Fran McCaffery and his experienced coaching staff have won 20 games or more eight of the last 12 years. Seibert and the Hawkeyes have placed fifth or better in the Big Ten standings seven of the last 10 seasons, including a third-place finish in 2021.

In 2022, the Hawkeyes won four games in four days to capture the Big Ten Tournament title, their third in program history, which ties as third most in the league. Iowa finished fourth in the conference standings and won 26 games; the second highest single season win total in program history.

Iowa had one of the most dominating players in college basketball during a four-year stretch from 2020-24. Luka Garza was twice named national player of the year and a consensus first-team All-America selection in 2020 and 2021, Keegan Murray was a finalist for the Wooden Award and Naismith Trophy, earned consensus first-team All-America laurels and was named the Karl Malone Power Forward of the Year in 2022, while Kris Murray was a consensus third-team All-American, a finalist for the Karl Malone Award and a semifinalist for the Wooden and Naismith awards.

Seibert and the Hawkeye staff have recruited and coached a first-team All-Big Ten honoree eight of the last 11 years.

Over the last five seasons, Iowa combined to win 106 games, finished fifth place or better in the Big Ten standings four times, won a Big Ten Tournament title (2022), competed in three NCAA Tournaments, and won 21 games over AP Top 25 opponents.

In 2021, Iowa won 14 Big Ten regular season games, its highest total since 1987. The Hawkeyes earned a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament, tying its highest ever seed in the tournament.

Seibert has 19 years of coaching experience, having most recently served as the head coach at the University of New Haven in West Haven, Connecticut, from 2005-10.

He was at the University of Hartford for five seasons, four as an assistant (2000-04) and one as associate head coach (2004-05). Seibert was the top assistant in 2002 when Hartford posted the second-best Division I turnaround. He also helped coach the Hawks to a top three finish in the America East Conference from 2002-04.

Seibert was also an assistant coach at Western Kentucky (1994-98). He helped coach the 1995 Western Kentucky team to the second round of the NCAA Tournament, a final national ranking of No. 18 and a 27-4 overall record, which was second only to national champion UCLA.

Other stops include one season as a volunteer assistant coach at Duquesne (1992-93) and working as a basketball administrative assistant at Pittsburgh (1993-94).

Seibert has worked individually with a number of athletes drafted in the NBA. In 1993, he worked with Derrick Alston (Duquesne University), who was a second-round draft pick of the Philadelphia 76ers. The following spring, Seibert worked with Erik Mobley (University of Pittsburgh), who was the 16th overall selection of the Milwaukee Bucks in the 1994 NBA Draft. In 1996, he worked with Ben Davis (University of Arizona), who was a second-round pick of the Phoenix Suns. Seibert also worked individually with Lee Nailon (TCU) in 1998-99, who was a second round selection by Charlotte.

Seibert worked as a college basketball recruiting expert for Insiders Report from 1998-2000.

He played collegiately at Frederick Community College (Md.) from 1981-83.

A native of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Seibert earned his bachelor’s degree in political science from Fredonia State University in New York in 1985.

Seibert is married to Rachel and has a daughter, Katie (26), who lives in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
