Jan. 9, 2005

DAVIS, CA – The University of Iowa wrestling team picked up its second dual victory of the day with a 26-9 victory over Cal Davis Sunday night at The Pavilion in Davis, CA. Iowa improves to 5-1 with the win, while Cal Davis drops to 3-2. The crowd of 5,150 set a Cal Davis dual wrestling meet attendance record, and is the largest Pavilion crowd so far this season. The facility also holds Aggie basketball, volleyball and gymnastics competitions.

It was a Zalesky vs. Zalesky match-up between head coaches as Hawkeye Head Coach Jim Zalesky faced Cal Davis Head Coach Lennie Zalesky, who is his older brother and a was three-time all-American and Big Ten Champion at Iowa. Jim Zalesky is now 2-0 in the brother series, picking up his first win in Iowa City in 2002-03 (36-3) and his second win tonight.

Iowa continued its success from its 30-7 victory at Fresno State earlier in the day, scoring wins in the first six matches of the Cal Davis dual. The Aggies went on a roll of their own, winning matches at 174, 184 and 197 before Hawkeye freshman Matt Fields ended the dual with a 15-6 major decision at heavyweight.

Iowa dominated the Aggies in the first six matches, holding a 26-2 takedown advantage and scoring four major decisions. Junior Joe Johnston (157), redshirt freshman Mark Perry (165) and freshmen Charlie Falck (125) and Alex Tsirtsis (141) all scored major decisions, while Mario Galanakis scored a 5-4 upset over Derek Moore, who is ranked in the top 20 at 133. Cal Davis ran off three straight wins, including unranked Brandon Bear’s 6-5 victory over second-ranked Paul Bradley at 184. Four Hawkeyes remain undefeated in dual competition. Galanakis, junior Ty Eustice (149) and Fields are all 6-0, while Perry is 5-0. Bradley (10-1), Eustice (15-1) and Perry (13-1) each have one loss in collegiate competition.

Iowa next dual will be Sunday, January 16, when the Hawkeyes travel to Stillwater, OK, to face the top-ranked Oklahoma State Cowboys. Match time is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. (CT) and the dual will be held in Gallagher-Iba Arena.
