IOWA CITY, IA – The University of Iowa wrestling team lost to Michigan, 21-11, Sunday night in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes scored wins at three bouts, and three of Iowa’s seven losses were by two points or less. Iowa fell to 9-5 overall and 4-3 in the Big Ten, while Michigan improved to 13-3-1 overall, 5-0-1 in the Big Ten.

The Hawkeyes jumped out to an 8-0 lead with fiery wins in the first two matches. Iowa freshman Charlie Falck scored seven takedowns, including four in the third period, to defeat Michigan’s Jim Shutich, 16-6, at 125 pounds. Hawkeye junior Mario Galanakis followed with an exciting 14-5 win over Wolverine Mark Moos at 133. Galanakis scored six nearfall points in the match, while holding Moos to five points scored on a reversal and nearfall flurry in the first period. Michigan stopped the Iowa momentum with decisions at the next five bouts, building a 15-8 team lead. Hawkeye junior Paul Bradley’s 7-5 decision over Joshua Weitzel at 184 made the team score 15-11 and kept the possibility of an Iowa win alive. But Michigan wins at the final two weights sealed the 21-11 Wolverine victory.

Iowa will wrestle its last dual meet of the 2004-05 season Sunday, February 20, when it hosts Indiana at 2 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The Hawkeyes will also host the 2005 Big Ten Championships, March 5-6, in Iowa City.
