IOWA CITY, IA – The Iowa men’s tennis team traveled to Kalamazoo, MI, Saturday to face Western Michigan. The Hawkeyes lost the dual meet, 7-0.
Sophomore Bart van Monsjou played the No. 1 singles match against Brady Crosby. He was defeated, 6-4, 3-6, 10-5. Freshman Christian Bierich played the No. 2 spot and was defeated by Jose Orozco, 6-4, 6-3. Sophomore J.P. Ritchie, at the No. 3 match, was defeated by Tim Bradshaw, 6-2, 6-3. At the No. 4 spot, senior Chaitu Malempati was defeated by Alex Birchmeier, 6-4, 4-6, 10-4. Senior Brett Taylor was defeated in the No. 5 singles match by Kevin Hayward, 6-1, 6-4. Freshman Zach Frisch finished up singles competition for the Hawkeyes and lost to Jeff French, 6-1, 6-1.
Taylor and Ritchie competed at the No. 1 doubles spot for the Hawkeyes. They lost to Crosby and Norville, 8-6. In the No. 2 spot, van Monsjou and Malempati were defeated by Orozco and Birchmeyer, 8-4. Senior Aaron Schaechterle and Bierich teamed to face Bradshaw and French in the No. 3 match, but were defeated, 8-5.
With this loss, the Hawkeyes drop to a record of 1-1. Next week, they will face Cleveland State on Friday and Wisconsin-Green Bay on Sunday. Both matches will be held at the University Recreational Building on the University of Iowa campus.
