SOUTH BEND, IN – The No. 39 Iowa women’s tennis team competed strongly against No. 2 Notre Dame today, but could not claim the victory. Notre Dame defeated Iowa, 6-1.
In doubles competition, at the number three position, Dowlin/Veselinovic defeated Connelly/Stastny, 8-7 (9-7) in a tiebreaking set. With this win, Dowlin and Veselinovic broke the fifteen match winning streak that Connelly/Stastny had accumulated this season.
In singles competition, Jacqueline Lee defeated No. 110 Kelcey Tefft, 6-4, 7-5. Lee halted Tefft’s previously attained winning streak at ten with this victory. Lee also improved her own winning streak to ten today.
Although Iowa competed strongly, the team’s efforts were not enough to win the match. No. 74 Christian Thompson defeated Hillary Mintz in a tiebreaking set, 6-1, 5-7, 1-0 (10-5), and Brook Buck defeated Mili Veselinovic, also in a tiebreaking set, 2-6, 6-4, 1-0 (10-3).
“Notre Dame is a very strong team, especially in their home facility. They are now 16-0 at home and they deserve to be where they are at. We competed well and had highlights with our win in doubles and Jacqueline’s win in singles. I felt like we really competed well against a strong team today,” said Head Coach Daryl Greenan.
Iowa will continue competition, Sunday, at Ohio State. Competition will begin at 10 a.m. (CST).
