IOWA CITY – After rain postponed half of Saturday’s scheduled doubleheader, the University of Iowa baseball team split a pair of games Sunday. Iowa (18-25, 7-13) won game one, 16-2, before falling in game two 7-6.

The Hawkeyes used a boatload of offense and a complete game gem from starter Austin Seward to take the win in game one. Iowa scored in every inning while pounding out 20 hits on the day. Seward scattered eight hits over seven innings, struck out six and lost his bid for the shutout in the bottom of the seventh.

Nate Price had a monster game, going 4-of-5 with a lead-off home run and five RBIs. Brian Burmester was 3-of-4 with a solo home run, while Jason White (3-of-4) and Jeff Engel (2-for-3) each knocked in three runs. In all, eight of Iowa’s 20 hits were for extra bases.

The Hawkeyes exploded out of the gates in the first, sending 12 men to the plate, getting seven runs and knocking Northwestern’s ace George Kontos out of the game. The party didn’t stop there, as Iowa scored two in the second, one in the third, three in the fourth, two in the fifth and another in the sixth.

In game two, Northwestern got on the board in the third, only to have Iowa claim a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth off five hits and an error. The Wildcats tied thing up in the fifth by posing three runs off five hits of their own.

Northwestern took a 7-4 lead with three runs in the top of the seventh on a two-run single and sacrifice fly.

The Hawkeyes made things interesting in the bottom of the ninth, scoring a pair of runs off RBI-hits from Price and Travis Sweet to cut the lead to 7-6.

Iowa returns to action next weekend with a Big Ten road trip to Indiana. Friday night’s series opener is set for 6:30 p.m. Wednesday’s game against Western Illinois has been cancelled.
