EVANSTON, IL – The University of Iowa men’s tennis team was in Evanston today to face the Northwestern Wildcats. The Hawkeyes lost all matches and were defeated, 7-0.
In singles competition, sophomore Bart van Monsjou played the No. 1 spot and was defeated by #55 Christian Tempke, 7-6, (8-6), 6-3. Tempke is the fourth ranked competitor van Monsjou has faced this season. In the No. 2 match, freshman Christian Bierich was defeated by Willy Lock, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Sophomore J.P. Ritchie was defeated by Juan Gomez in the No. 3 match, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. In the No. 4 match, senior Chaitu Malempati was defeated by Marc Dwyer, 7-5, 7-6 (3). Senior Brett Taylor fell to Adam Schaechterle in the No. 5 match, 6-3, 7-6 (5). In the No. 6 match, freshman Gregory Holm was defeated by Alexey Evstratenkov, 6-4, 7-6 (5).
In doubles competition, the No. 1 team of Taylor and Ritchie was defeated by Matt Christian and Schaechterle, 8-6. In the No. 2 match, van Monsjou and Holm were defeated by Tempke and Lock, 8-6. Senior Aaron Schaechterle teamed with Bierich in the No. 3 match. They were defeated by Gomez and Dwyer, 8-3.
“We’re playing much closer in the singles matches than the team score indicates,” said Head Coach Steve Houghton. “Especially against Northwestern because every match was very close.”
With this loss, the Hawkeyes fall to 5-10 overall and 0-6 in the Big Ten. They will return to action next weekend when they host Indiana and Penn State.
