BLOOMINGTON, IN – The University of Iowa baseball team swept Saturday’s doubleheader with Indiana, winning game one 4-3 and game two 6-0. Iowa ups its record to 21-25 (10-13 in the Big Ten), while Indiana falls to 17-28 (7-16).
In game one, the Hawkeyes jumped out to an early 2-0 lead with a pair of runs in the top of the first. Sophomore catcher Dusty Napoleon put Iowa on the board with a two-run double.
The Hoosiers tied the game up in the bottom of the second with a pair of unearned runs off Iowa starter Jeff Maitland, then took the lead on a solo home run by Ben Greenspan. Maitland scattered five hits over six innings in the win.
Iowa came right back to tie the game in the fourth on an RBI double from Jeff Engel, then took the lead in the sixth when Skyler Moss scored on a throwing error.
Closer Tim Gudex pitched a perfect seventh to get his eighth save.
Hawkeye righthander Austin Seward threw his second-straight gem in Big Ten play, tossing a seven-hit shutout in taking his record to 5-4.
Nate Price was 3-of-4 in game two with a pair of runs scored. He was a home runs short of hitting for the cycle. Sophomore Travis Sweet was 2-of-4 with a pair of RBIs, while Moss was 1-for-3 with two RBIs.
Iowa took a 1-0 lead in the first, then added four in the third to stake Seward to a 5-0 lead. The Hawkeyes added an insurance run in the sixth, while the junior pitcher cruised through the Hoosier lineup.
Iowa will go for the series sweep tomorrow at noon.
