FRESNO, CA – The University of Iowa baseball team topped the Fresno State Bulldogs, 10-8, Friday night in the Pepsi Johnny Quick Classic. Iowa ups its record at 5-4, while Fresno State falls to 11-14.
Trailing 1-0, the Hawkeyes exploded for eight runs in the top of the second on six hits and a Bulldog error. T.J. Cataldo led off with a walk, then stole second. Ben Geelan walked, then Matt Wooldrik loaded the baseball with a bunt single.
Caleb Curry put Iowa on the board with an RBI groundout, followed by RBI singles from Ryan Gryzwa, Jason White and Travis Sweet. Dusty Napoleon pushed a run home with a groundout, and Geelan ended the scoring with a two-run double down the leftfield line.
Fresno State began chipping away at the Hawkeye lead, scoring in each of the first five innings and cutting the lead to 9-7.
The Hawkeyes added an insurance run in the top of the ninth when Kevin Hoef led off with a triple, then scored on a single from Napoleon.
White led the offense by going 3-of-4, while Sweet, Geelan and Wooldrik picked up two hits each.
Joe Singer went four innings in his first start, giving up five runs off four hits. Mike Jacobs threw well in relief, allowing two runs and five hits in four innings while striking out seven. Justin Toole allowed one run in the ninth but picked up his first save.
Iowa returns to action tomorrow with a game against Dallas Baptist at 4:05 p.m.
